This will be the only book my students might actually hold in their hands this semester! As a new and fully remote public school with few book resources, we would benefit a great deal from Stevenson's powerful Just Mercy. Our U.S. Government class empowers students to ask big questions about what sort of society we live in, how our government should function, and what role we as individuals can play to promote justice. I can think of no better book to help them do this. We will use Just Mercy in two way that connect with our major interests in the course. One, we will examine how government functions in practice in Stevenson's early career. And two, students will use the book as a model for their final projects in the course, where they will analyze a case of injustice and write a policy memo for how they would like to redress it.
