Middle school has been difficult enough for our students in the past, but when they finally get to return to the school building, the structure is going to be so different. To be as safe as possible they will be in one cohort in one classroom with the same students all day every day with only a short escape for lunch and recess. No more talking to their friends during passing period, no more lockers, no more chances to walk to their next class, longer classes, fewer exploratory classes - so many changes! The items in the classroom coping kit can be used when a student's stress, frustration, and anxiety start to rise, before they implode or explode, so they can stay calm and keep learning. All of the items can be sanitized or kept by the student in order to reduce risk. Many of the items, like the calming glitter jars that we'll make, will help the students practice mindfulness and other items help use the senses to calm, like smelling lavender on a cotton ball.
