The yoga mats and blocks that I am requesting for my students are more than just 'things'. They are tools to support mental wellness, a physical reminder of what students learn on their mat. During a normal school year, we practice yoga and mindfulness all the time, and students take a course once a year that includes teaching not only the physical poses of yoga but the mental aspects of mindfulness. However, that usually includes sharing mats, blocks and bolsters. Now, more than ever, students need their own yoga mats and blocks, not only for safety reasons, but to remind themselves that they have the tools to help combat the increasing anxiety and depression that this COVID season is bringing. Students feel the anxiety and depression just as much as us adults do, and we need to teach them the strategies that will support them through this time. Strategies, such as mindfulness, breathing, and relaxation. I can't wait to support my students virtually with their own materials and help them access their strength. Thank you for making that possible.
