Our 2nd grade students will be learning virtually at least part time. We want to send home science experiments in a plastic bag that can be done with their parents. Hybrid students will take them home on when we have the students at school and we will deliver materials for our students who are 100% virtual. It's important that we not get rid of the hands-on science component that most students see as the best part of learning. Students will complete experiments for units in weather and animal adaptations. As we study animal behavior, we will explore how animals adapt to their surroundings and how their coverings protect them and identify them. Our students will dissect owl pellets. They will sort, analyze the bones, and decide which animals the owl ate as prey. They will look at animal foot prints and coverings and analyze how foot prints can be used to identify species, how foot shapes help them survive and adapt. Finally, they will look at their own finger prints as something that identifies each of them. Having these materials in their hands will allow their parents to participate in their learning and allow our hands-on approach to continue.
