Many students in my school come from literacy poor homes. Often this is a result of language barriers and/or poverty. In order to interrupt this cycle, this project will provide books for teens to take home to the little ones in their lives and simultaneously give them a vibrant, responsive magazine to learn from online. By taking a book from a Scholastic Pre-K book set home, students will be creating a more literacy rich environment for the little ones in their lives. Moreover, I will encourage them to read aloud with the little ones, so there is an embedded opportunity for the teens to read and model the habit of reading. In addition, this project will give a set of Pre-K books to our district's day care, which was created for the children of teen parents. My high school students also need an chance to read high interest material at an accessible reading level digitally. Action Scholastic offers captivating, nonfiction, current event articles with vocabulary and reading strategies lessons for deepening comprehension and skills. Action's dynamic and differentiated content is highly engaging and meets the needs of students with and IEP and who are learning English as an additional language.
