This exciting garden project is starting out by involving the first-grade classes at our school (other grades will be added after the first month). The students will take turns with watering, pulling weeds, and eventually harvesting the fresh produce. With the addition of the greenhouse covers, we will be able to grow food even during the winter! Not only does this project provide a collaborative and hands-on experience that promotes a sense of community, it touches on many NGSS science standards. Some of these standards include topics such as parts of a plant, plant needs, plant growth conditions, and seed dispersal (K-2) as well as the structure of living things and life cycles (3-5). It also supports K-5 social studies content; such as, communities and making a difference, which examines the concept that ALL people can make a difference (Connecticut Social Studies Frameworks). The materials purchased will be used to build, decorate, fertilize, and sustain a vegetable garden that all of the students will have access to. All students at our school will enjoy taking home the fresh produce from the garden beds. BUILD- kids will help put together the greenhouses DECORATE- everyone needs color in their life. FERTILIZE- we want to provide as much fresh produce as possible for as many students as possible, we will be adding fertilizers to the garden beds every two weeks. SUSTAIN- children will be taught how to identify and pull weeds from the garden, they will be taught fun recipes to use the fresh food in, and they will be taught simple carpentry needed to maintain the integrity of the garden beds and greenhouses.
