Gross motor (physical) skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large (core stabilizing) muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing, walking, running, and jumping. They also include hand-eye coordination skills such as ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking) as well as riding a bike or a scooter. Gross motor skills are abilities that allow children to do things that involve using the large muscles in the torso, arms, and legs to complete whole-body movements. Kids rely on these skills to have successful experiences at school, on the playground, and in the community.
