My students and I live in a small, predominately white, rural community and many of them do not have the opportunity to be exposed to experiences that are unlike their own. It is important for my students to be exposed to different cultures and help them to become empathetic individuals to help prepare them for this increasingly diverse world. Due to this, I am trying to build my classroom library to hold multicultural book clubs that will expose them to authentic, yet different experiences. By providing access to these multicultural books in book clubs, it will give my students the opportunity to develop an awareness of various backgrounds.
