Our dream, which we want to make a reality for our school community, is to have a re-instituted music program/marching band. A marching band will be a great way to build our school community academically and socially. Also, it will provide a musical program that our school community has been lacking in recent years. Our school community is a vibrant one; our hallways are filled with bright and colorful optics emanating from the art projects posted throughout our building, and yet, there is something missing in our hallways. We are missing the radiating and jubilant sounds of a music program; a thriving music program will complement our already existing art program. A music program will provide our students with the auditory stimulus that will help build upon the assets already present in our school community. Studies show, according to Sing for Hope, that “art empowers us to build a better future. Quality arts education has the power to engage students of all backgrounds and learning abilities. Research indicates that students involved in the arts are more attentive in the classroom, while increased arts programming has been linked to boosts in standardized test scores. Moreover, the arts teach students how to approach complex problems with creativity and innovation, encourage young people to develop confidence and emotional maturity, and provide youth with an essential form of expression.” Therefore, adding a music program to go alongside our already thriving art program will further improve not only the academic skills of our students, but it will also develop and strengthen our students’ social skills.
