The use of alphabet letters that can be physically manipulated is a kinesthetic approach to helping students to encode and decode words as well as learning to manipulate words by segmenting, deleting, matching, adding, counting, and blending phonemes. All of these activities build a student's phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the student's ability to manipulate the individual sounds in a word or syllable. Readers will provide continuous text for them to use when putting their new skills into practice. These readers start at the simplest three-word sentences and build to match a student's advancing abilities.
