In all schools it can be difficult to create meaningful, rigorous lessons, especially ones that combine multiple skills. In first grade at Crystal Hill Elementary we are focusing on having high expectations of our students by creating such lessons to engage our little ones. One method of creating meaning and deepening understanding is crossing subjects together. Our district has done a wonderful job of obtaining a great new math curriculum that incorporates multiple modalities of learning such as games, discussion, discovery and reading! The stories that are implemented throughout the curriculum, however, are not included within it. These books will help us to engage story telling and language arts skills within the math curriculum to create more depth and meaning for our students as they gain new skills.
