Students with communication disorders and intellectual disabilities often need a flexible approach to learning, and no one-size-fits-all method will meet their needs. In the classroom, I put this knowledge into practice by reaching my students with verbal feedback, tangible manipulatives, and visual aids. Distance learning over a computer screen can be a particular challenge to the needs that these students have. With this technology, I can turn the materials that my students use in the classroom into online lessons that are accessible to learners with special needs. These students and their dedicated parents are working hard to stay connected during distance learning. I don't want them to miss out on the opportunity to achieve their communication goals due to the challenges of adapting the hands-on style that works best for them to the virtual format that protects them during this health emergency.
