Classroom community and inclusion is one of the most important aspect of a 1st grade classroom. A child walking into their classroom should feel a sense of security, safety, and a little bit like home. It's their place to feel welcome and engaged. Currently, our classroom library is a bit empty and lacking that "home-y" feel. I believe that our classroom library can be a safe place for children within the classroom to relax, decompress, grab a book and a pillow, and be captivated by a new story! They can get to know new characters and travel to a far away place from the comfort of their own space at school. I want to create this space in my room and help students have that space for them here. I would use the rug, throw pillows, and twinkle lights to begin with that cozy feel that will help them know this space is for them to explore. These items will exhibit a warmness to the library. The take home pouches will help students keep their books organized and to save them for the next day if they were unable to finish. Knowing they will have another opportunity to finish that book and that this is a place they will return and their spot is saved will add to our sense of classroom community and safety. The storage bins will help keep this space organized and to alleviate stress and anxiety that can be connected to messiness and disarray. Crisp, clean lines throughout the library will encourage students to clean up after themselves and take pride in the organization of their library. Last, but certainly not least, are the books! What is more important in a classroom library than filling it with stories that students can fall in love with?!
