I was excited when my principal encouraged staff to reflect on how we can better celebrate diversity and promote equity in our school after the turbulent events of the summer of 2020. I joined the diversity committee he formed this year, and I've been thinking of other ways to bring these issues into the classroom. Our students do not live in a particularly diverse area and have limited exposure to the issues they've been seeing in the news, yet some of our underrepresented students are certainly struggling with many feelings as they watch the news and reflect on their own experiences. In order to foster understanding, I would like to supplement my classroom library with books that reflect diversity. The books I have selected deal with issues of race, gender, ethnicity, and sexual identity. It is my goal to provide a rich and varied reading environment for my students in order to expose them to a wide range of experiences and viewpoints. I believe that reading about experiences different from their own will make them more empathetic, educated, and open-minded.
