This year I wanted to teach something engaging during the fourth nine weeks. By then, we will have been through three quarters of a school year during a pandemic. We will need something to energize us for the final stretch. So after a lot of deliberation, I chose No Country for Old Men. Why? It's about good and evil. It's a fun read. It's been on the AP exam. It's by one of my favorite authors. And, above all, it's a book I think the multiple different kinds of students I have will love. I've already received a lot of buzz about this unit. One student asked on the first day if that was indeed what we were reading. A parent and curriculum specialist in our district agreed with me that, of the two I was going between, it was certainly the best. Another parent at Open House threw her hands up when I told her, excited for all of the books her daughter will be reading this year, especially this one. Another text I wanted to teach is Their Eyes Were Watching God. It will provide us a launching point to learn about literary styles and movements, from folklore to the Harlem Renaissance. It will also give us the proper backdrop to wrestle with the current events that have been front and center since the murder of George Floyd. I found almost an entire set at a book sale, I just need a few more. With these books, I will be able to give each student a copy for the nine weeks. This will allow them to take them home as well as give us more time in class to work with and learn from the texts. Your donation will make for an exciting and challenging school year!
