In our hybrid model for learning this year, students are in school 50% of the time and learning from home with prepared lessons 50% of the time to minimize potential exposure to COVID-19. Having three copies each of the titles I've requested will allow me to group students into three-member literature circles. Activities based on these books will foster independent reading skills and collaborative discussion to share and expand on their thinking. During the days students are learning from home, they can read and meet virtually with their 3-member groups to discuss their books. Activities in class will provide opportunities to present their learning in creative ways through written, visual, and performance-based work. As a language arts teacher, it is important to me to create a literature-rich environment in my classroom that welcomes ALL students. In my current classroom library, there are (1) not enough copies of books to allow each student to take a book home for virtual learning days, and (2) fiction titles available in multiple copies do not represent diverse authors, characters, and cultures. For young readers, literature offers a safe place to explore human experience and, perhaps, understand their own lives as part of the larger human experience. Many of my students claim they "don't like to read" and I think this may be because they've never encountered characters like themselves in the books they've been assigned. Having a selection of books that mirror the growing diversity among my students will, perhaps, help reluctant readers find themselves in the stories and discover the joy of reading.
