The Coronavirus Pandemic has turned the education field up-side-down. Being a seasoned teacher, accustomed in-person interactions never did I think that I would be teaching from a computer screen, meeting students & families through zoom, and posting assignments & grading via google classroom. Just like teaching has shifted, so has learning. Students also have to accommodate to new ways of learning, but there is nothing like holding a paper copy of a novel and have the ability to touch the pages, highlight, and write little notes along the margins about favorite parts, new ideas, things that a passage makes you think about. In the middle of so many changes, I would like to provide students with something familiar, a paper copy of a novel so they can hold onto what it's like to immerse themselves in a different world (at least momentarily) and engage in literary work. The novels I want to give my students are in Spanish because my students are part of a dual-immersion program. Spanish literature is difficult to find in school libraries, so my are limited to the number of novels they can read each year. I plan to teach the novel as part of a Novel Study Unit. By reading this novel students will develop understanding of literary devices, increase academic vocabulary, and engage in authentic reading experiences that may potentially spark a love for life-long reading.
