I am returning to the (virtual) classroom after a few years of literacy coaching and my new classroom library consists of mainly well-loved but older donated books. While many of those books contain wonderful stories and lessons, a majority of them are old and tattered, and more importantly they do not contain diverse characters or themes. It is important for all students to be exposed to diverse perspectives and one of the best ways to do that is through the books they read. My students will at least be starting out the school year at home because of rising Covid19-positive cases in our county. Some students don't have access to grade level appropriate texts at their homes, and I would like to provide them with a check-out schedule where I can make sure they have access to interesting, inspiring, and relatable books for at-home reading. Students need access to diverse books to make sense of the diverse world around them. These books will serve as windows and mirrors for my students: through windows students see diverse perspectives and cultures and in mirrors students see their own experiences and culture reflected. Both are vital to producing educated, empathetic, and responsible citizens.
