With reluctant readers, you have to be exciting and can't have cookie-cutter lessons, which is why I want to create a lit lab, or literacy lab in my room. Who wants to sit and read on a hard chair and old desk? Reading should be pleasurable, and students should have the opportunity to literally curl up with a good book, relax, and go explore another world. They should "discover," and fall in love with reading. These beanbag chairs and rug will allow us to do that. Studies show that high-quality, attractive class environments help children feel secure, safe and valued. When students feel valued, this increases self confidence and students become more motivated. Imagine wanting to go home, relax and curl up with a book, but due to resources, not being able to do that? The lit lab will afford students that opportunity. My students have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and the lit lab will only further excite students. They will enter the class eager to drop everything and read. When students enjoy reading, it positively affects their scores across the board. It's time to level the playing field for my students, and work to create grade level readers and above! These books will continue to enhance students' joy for reading. Books are treated with love and care, as students are grateful for new books. These titles have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles like these, and asked them what books they would enjoy reading. Since students had choice in the book selection, it helps them to enjoy independent reading time. Imagine a pleasing environment in which students feel comfortable and relaxed enough to grapple with a new book, learn, and have fun!
