This upcoming school has brought a lot of uncertainty into our classroom and community. However, this does not change the fact that my students still need time and tools to play with. As an Early Childhood Educator, I support play in my classroom. Play is an essential part of a child's life. Now more than ever children need and deserve a time to play and tools to express themselves. I would love to be able to provide my students with tools and promote play as we return to the classroom. I support play because I know how much students benefit from playing with peers and materials. However, since we have to practice social distancing it can be challenging for students to play and interact with each other which is why I want to create "Fun Boxes" filled with manipulatives for students to play with at their desks. In these boxes, students will have manipulatives such as magnet tiles and other requested items. The materials I have requested will help me to support play in my classroom while allowing my students to engage and express themselves. As a first grade teacher, I believe students learn best through play. These tools will enhance their cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development while engaging with these materials. During these unprecedented times, my ultimate goal is to provide my students with tools that will allow them to express themselves even while facing difficult challenges. With so much being taken away from students, this is my way of bringing some sort of normality into their lives.
