I enjoy incorporating literacy-based speech and language therapy because so many of my students are also struggling readers. Children's books provide great exposure for higher-level vocabulary as well as provide context and background knowledge many of my students are often missing. Currently, in 2020 there are only about 23% of books that represent diverse cultures. This alone means that in a library of 100 books, my students might be able to find about 23 that represent them! Growing up, I had the privilege of going to a library and finding books that related to my culture and person. Research also tells us that when children are presented with books and models similar to their culture, it helps foster an increased desire to learn. Likewise, children exposed to other cultures, develop increased world knowledge and culture sensitivity. Help my children access the limitless potential that learning and reading provide for them.
