Students have been through a lot this year. Suddenly being separated from their friends and possibly even some family members, all because of a virus that is hard to comprehend (even for adults) can be traumatizing and difficult to deal with. My job as a Special Education Affective Needs teacher is to teach my students academic content as well as behavior regulation and emotional coping skills. Oftentimes a crisis could be avoided if a student opens up about their emotions, however that is asking a lot from elementary students. With resources for social emotional learning and feelings regulation, my students will have more ways to express themselves. Telling people how you feel can be difficult, but a rug that they can point to will make it so much easier for their needs to be met.
