Books are one of the most powerful tools students use to understand the world around them. The literature a child has access to can strongly influence they way they perceive themselves and the how they feel they are perceived by the world. A diverse library allows for students to see themselves in the literature, relating to characters with common interests, traditions, and experiences. It also provides a glimpse into the experiences and feelings of others. As put by Jamie Campbell Naidoo, "Children’s materials that accurately portray diversity have a positive influence on a child’s self-image and help him or her build bridges of cultural understanding." Reading has the power to bring people together for discussions that can open minds and hearts to the experiences of others. Due to the challenges of COVID, half my students will be learning from school while the others will be signing in from home. These read alouds align with the curriculum and are a great way to bring our class together to learn and grow as a community!
