I have a great group of second graders. They're sweet and friendly and get along well together. About 75% of my students are English language learners. Actually, they're all learning English, but some started out life with a different language. Their greatest need within language arts is vocabulary development. Usually, a verbal or written explanation of a word isn't enough. They need to see or touch something to truly acquire an understanding.
