This year we want to help our students excel in MATH! We are starting MI-6. It is a "Math Initiative" for the ENTIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL! Khan Academy will be taking our students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. Students will review basic math skills, strengthen skills that are needed to be successful in higher level math, AND learn math skills that they may have missed during our Spring School Closure. After being introduced to the project, students were excited to participate and didn't want to quit. One 7th grade student, after working for 20 minutes on Khan Academy, exclaimed, "Thank you for having us go back to relearn math. I understand something that has messed me up for a long time now." We want to reward these students with small prizes as they pass each level of completion from Kindergarten all the way through 6th Grade. Our math department has designed a prize schedule for each level with lots of choices for students. This is not a project that will take one day to complete. The Kindergarten Level takes at least 2 hours. But the benefits of reviewing math skills through 6th Grade will be LONG-LASTING. One teacher in California used Khan Academy in his 6th grade Title I school and moved his students from below proficient to above proficient in just one year. We (the Math Department) are SO EXCITED to facilitate this and would love to have your help to keep our students motivated.
