"Children need windows and mirrors. They need mirrors in which they see themselves and windows through which they see the world.” -Rudine Sims Bishop. This summer I had the opportunity to participate in two different professional developments that focused on race equity-and it changed me. The lessons I learned have stayed with me and have challenged me in ways I have never been challenged. Part of the part of the professional development revolved around reading and text diversity. The presenters kept saying that students must see themselves in the books they read. While I have heard this time and time again, it wasn't until these presentations where my heart and mind said that it was time for me to do the work and make changes to my library so that my students were able to connect more to the stories we were reading; buying books that reflected who they were as human beings. The books on this list are a reflection of the diverse students that I have the privilege and honor to teach. I have purchased a curriculum called Perspectives through Picture Books that allows the scholars to dive into deeper conversations and make important connections to the characters and stories. I cannot wait to get started, and cannot wait to grow the hearts and minds of my students.
