My goal for my students is for them to see themselves represented in the books in the library so they recognize the library as a place where they belong. As the students see themselves reflected in the books, I hope to encourage their interest and love of reading. Eighty-one percent of the students at my school identify as African American; however, only 4% of the books in the library contain main characters that are African American. To make the library welcoming and inclusive, students must see themselves reflected in the books on the shelves.
