Having individual novels for the students to use is more captivating than the old reader. Remember the old reading book that has a collection of stories in them? They are still the same boring stories. Even though the stories are good to teach one or two reading concepts like fact and opinion, the kids desire more. Reading a full novel helps to instill the love for reading! Not only can you do so much with teaching the reading concepts, the students learn about the climax of a story line and want to continue reading until the mystery is solved. The students need to be able to take books home to fulfill the requirement of 30 min of independent reading at home.
