My students love to read about real people, places, events and even animals. I would like to give them high interest text that will encourage more time spent reading during our live video lessons, and outside of class time at home using the website included with their subscription. The activities and questions challenge students to apply critical thinking skills and to make text to self connections. What better way to build better readers and global citizens than giving them text that they can empathize with? John Guthrie, a researcher in the area of student motivation in literacy, defines engaged readers as “purposeful, intrinsically motivated, and socially interactive.” Scholastic News is a tool that will create opportunities for students to develop these skill sets in a meaningful and fun way.
