These cameras will be used by students to help them explore their environment and express themselves through visual storytelling. The camera is a powerful tool that can give students a voice, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and how they fit in the world. Students will learn the fundamentals of photography, such as the decisive moment, composition, subject, camera angles, how to see and use light, and digital editing. Students will step outside of the classroom and examine their community in the French Quarter– the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, through their camera lens. They will learn what it means to belong to a place and how that place can influence and form their identity. Students will gain a strong understanding of a sense of place by learning about the history, environment, and culture that exists in the French Quarter form an artistic perspective. Since students are starting the year learning virtually, the virtual classroom lends itself perfectly to the use of digital cameras in the field as a learning tool while maintaining safe social distancing and sharing their work with the entire class.
