My little learners have sensory deficits that sometimes make learning a little tricky. Think of what its like trying to focus when you feel anxious, or if it is too loud or too bright in the room. Now imagine you do not know how to remedy that situation. A weighted blanket, light blocker, or handful of putty can make a world of difference and provide support to students who cannot regulate on their own. These supports can help students feel calm and allow them to better focus on their learning. When students have access to sensory supports throughout the day, they are better able to focus on learning and avoid behaviors related to sensory needs. If a student can grab a yoga ball to bounce on while working on math, or a weighted blanket to lay across their lap while they work on reading- these items can make a world of difference! Having access to supports like these is necessary for students with autism to be successful in the classroom.
