Mural making is a special way to create art as a community and beautify shared space. Last year, my students and I created indoor murals on temporary walls within our school building while it was undergoing renovations. This year, the walls have been torn down and we now have access to an outdoor space that we can create a permanent mural on. My students have experience using non-toxic water based spray paint for previous murals and they couldn't get enough of it! Using spray paint provided my students with an exciting opportunity to experiment with a unique form of art making that isn't widely available in schools. I also observed how deeply engaged all of my student artists were the process of creating. During this time of distance and isolation, community building projects are more important than ever, and to provide my students with an experience that is fun, collaborative, and safe outdoors is my greatest hope. The vision for this mural is for each student in grades 3-5 to contribute one spray painted symbol to the wall. This collection of symbols, such as shapes and lines, will be overlapped with a series of positive affirmations that the students come up with. Not only will the process of creating the mural be community-driven, but I also hope it serves as source of uplifting and support when students view its contents.
