I have 18 students who are at home and 42 students who are in school. All of these students are deserving and could benefit from science enrichment. We have been studying physical and Earth science this spring, and these mini projects would be a great hands-on activity they could do at home. In 5th Grade Science, the Georgia Standards of Excellence learning objective this donation would target is: S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the differences between a physical change and a chemical change. c. Plan and carry out an investigation to determine if a chemical change occurred based on observable evidence (color, gas, temperature change, odor, new substance produced). We do hands-on activities in class, and having the ability to send something home for the in-school students would extend their learning. For the online students, it would make the lessons more real and exciting. Even though I demonstrate experiments on camera, the online students do not get to experience the "magic" up close and in person. It would be great to put something in their hands! They could then create their own chemical reactions.
