Teaching my students through thematic units that are meaningful and relevant to them and their lives is crucial. This is how they connect, relate, understand, and grow. This is true even more-so while we are currently learning from home remotely. Engagement is crucial, so the books that we choose have to be ones they will embrace with familiarity and excitement. These two class sets of texts I have chosen, one about immigration, and the other on inter-generational relationships between grandparent and grandchild are two topics near and dear to my students' hearts; giving them an opportunity not just to read good literature, but to discuss it with their peers, share and compare stories, and write about it all too! These books will be part of units encompassing many different texts from cultures all over the world, being sure to reach my diverse group of students and the many countries they come from. What better way to do that than with Book Club for kids!? Reading is at the heart of everything we do; we weave it in seamlessly through our day, making cross-curricular connections with Writing, Social Studies, and even Science. Materials such as pencils, post-its, erasers, and highlighters help intertwine Writing in. Having binders, and folders for Reading and Writing help them to keep their work organized and also make it easy to refer to later in discussion. Dry erase boards and markers help us get our thinking down and quick-share it online during reading so others can see it and get discussions started. I just know my second graders will benefit tremendously from this project, and they're going to LOVE it too!!!
