Reading comprehension and fluency skills are crucial to student success and fostering a love of reading is one of the most important goals I have as a teacher. Every book is an opportunity for growth. Our extended text study of The Lions of Little Rock, whether we are in the classroom or learning virtually, will give each student an opportunity to become better, more skilled readers. Students who are proficient readers become lifelong readers! We will use this text to model and teach reading comprehension, comparing and contrasting, inferences, theme, and many other important skills. Because we are a school in Arkansas, I believe many of my students will have an extra interest in and connection to this fictionalized account of the integration of Little Rock schools in 1958. It will also tie in neatly with our social studies units on citizenship and will foster discussion about so many important topics related to the Civil Rights Movement. These books will be used by my current students and by future students for many years to come.
