I am a teacher dedicated to offering engaging and meaningful lessons to my special education students, and the natural world offers us a freedom that we won't have inside -- where we will have to focus more on social distancing and worry about the virus droplets in the air. Outside, we can be safer while we do projects -- like the taping maple trees for their sap, or writing about the beauty of our surroundings, or calculating how far and long it will take for us to traverse the grounds of our school. But even outside, where we are safer from the virus, students need basic supplies and protection. Canopies will protect our materials and sensitive skin from both sun and precipitation. Students will use their comfortable camping chairs (both indoors and out) to spread out with their lap desks -- that I already acquired. The outdoor blankets will offer another seating option for students want to work on the ground, and I will use my portable white board to introduce and focus lessons. The portable charges mean we won't have to rush back into the school if our computer batteries are getting low, and finally, the tote bags will become our "adventure bags," to carry our water bottles, Chromebooks, notebooks, pencils, and more. After all, school and learning should be an exciting adventure, and regardless of the challenges of the next year, I hope to make it one for my incoming students.
