With these books, my students will have an opportunity to see how literature can be relevant in their own lives. They will learn about the civil rights movement through the lens of today’s Black Lives Matter movement and how characters their own age can still learn from the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. We will also use the novel to explore their passions in life and consider how they can make the world better and impact real change. This novel is highly relevant to today’s youth and is high interest in a curriculum that, without this novel, does not speak to who they are.
