Our next project is a 2 part project where students will learn about different social movements from the 1960s and how they are connected to social movements today. They will study how monuments and memorials have contributed to a certain narrative of US History--analyzing how artifacts of cultural memory have power in our national landscape. They will then design a monument together and within a persuasive essay argue why that monument should be erected to honor the people of the social movement they have studied. With so much of their course online, reading and writing can put additional strain on their eyes and cause them to lose focus. Additionally, because my students use Chromebooks, their ability to read and write is fully dependent on their access to quality high-speed internet during wildfire season. Donations that support me putting together a course reader and annotation packet can greatly increase the ease with which they are able to engage in ELA and Historical content! Plus, many students learn and focus better when they are physically reading and taking notes. Students will benefit from Post-its, highlighters, pencils, pens, and photocopies of our essays!
