Printmaking is a traditional art which stems from multiple cultures, but it has endured along with processes like painting and sculpture. Why? Because it develops a unique aesthetic and the artist puts their heart into the process of developing their prints. Printmaking is a very process-heavy art form, and it lends itself to amazing educational opportunities. Through printmaking, my students will learn about everything from material safety to relaxation to the elements of art! Students will deepen their drawing skills to prepare their design, their knowledge of the element of art "line", develop perseverance through the long process, and be able to meditate on their artwork as they create it. Similar to creating Mandalas, carving linoleum is a repetitive act that slowly results in an image being created, and it provides the same relaxing effect as coloring or drawing Mandalas. I believe that this project will be a great addition to my curriculum as students attend school during a very stressful time.
