With the recent push for distance learning because of COVID-19, I decided to do what I think is best for my students by ensuring I still give them the best possible educational opportunities. A teachers presence in a classroom is something that technology can never replace. If I am forced to teach all online, students will be missing the best part of a classroom: a teacher's energy, empowerment and presence. I want to make sure my students this year (and for years to come) do not ever miss out on that. So how can I make this possible? I recently came about a distance learning strategy known as, "Flipped Classroom" where in summary a large portion of the instruction actually comes from when the students are at home. This does not mean extra homework, in fact- the opposite. The majority of the 'work' and practice of the content in action is during school-hours, and at home the students will watch a lesson of me teaching the content. The iPad allows me to film lessons using various apps and edit & upload it to our Online Classroom. These videos will be easily accessed by the students on their SmartPhones at all times. In addition to the videos, apps like Screencastify & EdPuzzle will be added for in depth content application. This goes beyond JUST distance learning, this strategy can be leveraged as well by catching-up students who miss a school day, want extra instruction following the in-person class when taught, or maybe fell asleep during 2nd period after a long night of Fort-nite and War-zone. This also can be used as a pre-teaching strategy, or essentially just give students another opportunity to grasp or learn a concept on their own time. The possibilities of a FLIPPED CLASSROOM are endless.
