I plan to use Silver (a book about an epidemic) to, not only instill a love for reading with my Critical Reading class but also to help all of my students process their thoughts and emotions during this pandemic. We will read together, as well as in groups. This book covers social issues, human relationships, self-discovery, and coping with isolation. Many students have been isolated at home caring for younger siblings throughout this pandemic in order for their parents to work. Many do not have access to the internet to communicate with friends. These are the issues I hope to help students cope with as they return to my classroom. While sorting through these issues, I hope to guide students to rekindle a love of reading so they may not feel so alone should we return to online learning.
