My 8th grade students have not been in a face-to-face art class since 6th grade due to the pandemic. They have not had and will not have the benefit and enjoyment of learning how to use various media in person for most of their middle school art experience. (They had 7th grade art class at the beginning of the pandemic in March.) I am hoping to provide them with more basic materials during this continued pandemic and new school year. Watercolor pencils seem a diverse tool that will give them the experience and flexibility of using color pencils as well as watercolor paint for their art projects.
