Last year my third grade class worked on opinion writing. One thing that came out of that authentic writing activity was the realization that kids LOVE current events and my kiddos LOVED Scholastic News. For reluctant readers these resources are very inviting and visually pleasing. There are math concepts, science standards, mindfulness articles, and so much more packed into these weekly magazines. Students learned about various kid-friendly topics and the interactive features are limitless. Special needs students were especially motivated to read these magazines each week due to the online read aloud features. Students last year felt so passionate about magazines that they wrote persuasive speeches to our school Superintendent. This school year with budget cuts our Scholastic News subscription and all supplies will be cut. Please help me provide this effective educational tool for my students.
