Most of the sixth-grade social studies lessons involve students making quick responses by writing on a whiteboard or even on their desks with dry-erase markers. This allows teachers to quickly check for understanding. For example, we play team review games where teams submit their answers using a whiteboard. Students also use whiteboards in many activities where we use academic vocabulary. In a world where they are continually learning online, and bombarded with computer activities, using whiteboards as a physical manipulative allows for a wider variety of instructional strategies. We just want to keep it interesting for the kids!
