I teach small groups of students (usually 10 or less) Algebra I in an intervention setting. Typically, I write notes and work problems in a spiral notebook. Using a document camera, I project these onto the wall for students to see as I work the problems. This works fine in an in person classroom, and it actually models how to take notes on their own paper. In a virtual environment, however, this method has some problems. With a surface pro, I will be able to take my students' learning to a deeper level "beyond the surface" so to speak. Students need to see me working the problems whether we are in the physical classroom or in a virtual classroom. In addition, I'll be able to hold virtual meetings with students individually to give needed help. I'll be able to work problems directly to the student's screen by using a surface pro. As we tackle the issues of student learning in this "new normal", we must utilize more sophisticated tools to do this. The surface pro is such a tool.
