I am looking forward to introducing my 8th grade class to more genres of poetry this year. Because of COVID and learning remotely last spring, we were unable to do some of the exciting poetry projects we had planned for quarter four. I am lucky enough to be teaching this group again this year, so I want to make our poetry unit extra special. So many of these students found their voices through writing last year, and a handful of them expressed interest in poetry as a way to write about the joys, hardships, and daily struggles of being a teenager during these tumultuous times. Through poetry-- especially genres that combine art and writing-- many students are able to discover their creative voices and create works that they are proud of and want to share with their classmates and parents and display in the school. I want to be able to share this unit with my in-person and remote learners which is why I want to start planning this spring unit now.
