Thermal cameras in the middle school science classroom will make a difference in my student's learning will make a difference by getting real world tools in their hands. We can talk about technology in the classroom but to see a tool like a thermal camera used in the classroom can increase interest levels in students. My students sometimes struggle to get excited about learning but I always try to make my class exciting however I can. My students last year got excited when I brought my thermometer from home in to show that a piece of metal that feels cold is the same temperature as their table tops. Imagine how excited they would be with seeing the temperature as a picture for themselves. Having a thermal camera in my science classroom will help when building a device that heats or cools using chemical reactions. My students invent, build, test, and then make adjustments to their devices. I feel like a thermal camera can not only help them visualize what may need improvements like insulation, but expand their thinking on what tools exist and how they could use something like that in a future job. Maybe they would extend their thinking to how can they keep their house warmer in winter or cooler in summer. We also build solar cookers that I can see a thermal camera helping with conduction, convection, and radiation.
