Every year we begin our reading instruction with a novel study of Love That Dog. We not only learn about conflict and character evolution, we also get to read some terrific poetry and create our own. My reluctant writers and those who just might be a little rusty after a summer off enjoy starting the year off by trying their hand at poetry. By sharing their writing and discussing the story, classroom community grows. Love That Dog provides the structure and inspiration for that first dive into creative writing and builds their writing confidence.

About my class
