My students live in a rural area where fishing and hunting are very popular activities. They love to be outdoors, explore, and be in contact with nature. Unfortunately, we cannot do any of those activities at the moment. My goal is to bring these experiences to the classroom. The attendance rate in our school is very low, and the dropout rate is very high; I want to create attractive hands-on activities so that the lessons will be more engaging, and the attendance will increase. Marine science class does not count on any specific lab equipment. Acquiring this material would be the first step to build up the marine science lab equipment. I know my students can be very successful in science; however, they need more visual and hands-on lessons activities. The weather water tanks will help the students to visualize a hard concept like thermoclines in the ocean. They will need to understand this concept during the Unit 2: Introduction to Oceanography. Also, thermoclines are very important when they study climate change because the thermocline will fluctuate if ice keeps melting. They will study climate change during Unit 3: Marine Ecology and Unit 4: Humans and the Sea. Unit 1: Life in the ocean is dedicated to marine organisms from algae to marine mammals. I would love to have microscope slides so they can see the microscopic organisms, and also have starfish to dissect. The goal is to engage them in this topic and increase attendance. If they could not come to class, I will do live demonstrations where they can actively participate. Please, help me to provide the best marine science experience.
