For my students, my office has always been a safe and welcoming place. From my cozy rocking chair, to the small table where we sit together to their feelings and concerns, to games and soothing sensory items, it's all set up to help kids feel comfortable opening up and working with me. But this year, everything will be different. With the pandemic, shared items and spaces bring the constant fear of germs and contamination. It has also brought very real feelings of stress and anxiety to the students I work with - students whose families are already at higher risk for the virus. The kids will need more support and time to work through these feelings. One way that I can support my students is supplying individual and safe therapy items in a personal storage box for my students - allowing them to access these things without worrying about sharing germs with another student. These storage boxes would hold items such as stress balls, individual games, feelings cards, slime, or play-doh. A small stuffed toy from their box could safely offer comfort to a student when they are in my office. Pens, journals, art supplies and coloring books could also be kept safe in the box, so that students would have the supplies they need for social work sessions or when they just need to reflect. Thank you for supporting my students in this very difficult time for us all.
